Building a Career, One Conversation at a Time

New Lawyer Division
One of the best pieces of advice I received as a young lawyer had nothing to do with trial advocacy, legal writing, or substantive law. It was this: your career will be shaped as much by your relationships as by your legal ability.
Law school teaches us how to think like lawyers. Our early years in practice teach us how to become lawyers. That process happens in courtrooms, conference rooms, and law offices, but also through conversations with colleagues who have faced the same challenges, made similar mistakes, and found their own paths through the profession.
The legal profession can be incredibly rewarding, but it can also be isolating. Many of us spend our days advocating for clients, managing difficult cases, and navigating demanding workloads. Taking time to build genuine connections with other attorneys is not a distraction from professional development, it is an important part of it.
That spirit of connection was on full display at our recent Beach & Bonfire Networking Meetup at Ski Beach. Attorneys gathered to enjoy a beautiful San Diego evening, share stories from practice, and connect outside the usual demands of the profession. Events like these remind us that some of the most valuable opportunities in our careers often begin with a simple conversation.
The momentum continues on July 16 with our Annual Summer Social at the Hard Rock Hotel. This year’s rock-and-roll-themed event promises an evening of music, conversation, and networking with attorneys from across San Diego. Whether you arrive in a band tee and leather jacket or straight from the office, we hope you will join us for what is always one of the New Lawyer Division’s most popular events!
As lawyers, we spend much of our time advocating for others. These events are an opportunity to invest in ourselves, our professional networks, and the broader legal community that supports us throughout our careers.
I hope to see many of you this summer. If you have been considering attending an NLD event but have not yet made it out to one, this is your sign to give it a try! Some of the most valuable professional relationships begin with a simple conversation.
See you there.
Best,
Zach Brooks, Esq.
