NLD Farewell

NLD Farewell

NLD,

As my term as Chair of the New Lawyer Division comes to a close, I am filled with gratitude and awe at what we accomplished together this year. Thank you for trusting me, for electing me, and for showing up with so much energy, creativity, and passion. You made this year unforgettable and reminded me again and again why this Division is so special.

I might be biased (and I’ll happily stand by this forever), but the New Lawyer Division is the heart of the San Diego County Bar Association. Even though we are all within our first seven years of practice, the leadership, vision, and enthusiasm in this group run deep.

Getting to know so many of you — through emails, at events, and during my Coffee with Claudia sessions— has been a true highlight. Quick check-ins or long chats, every conversation reminded me that this Division thrives on connection, curiosity, and support. Each of you brings something unique to the table, and together we represent the next generation of SDCBA leaders.

This year showed what happens when we show up for each other intentionally. From Bags N Brunch, where we partnered with the Urban League of San Diego County and Sharia’s Closet to support families in need and stayed to build community over brunch, to taking a night off to laugh and cheer at a San Diego Gulls game, we created space for connection in every form.

We inspired future generations at our Children’s Book Event, showed up in full force at our signature Wild West Summer Social, and ended summer around a beach fire making s’mores and memories. We sharpened our skills with a court practice series led by Judge Marcella McLaughlin, embraced the fun of not one but two Halloween events, and wrapped up the year with our Naughty and Nice Christmas Sweater Drive and Holiday Party. It was the perfect way to celebrate everything we built together, honor our incredible For the Record contributors, and head into 2026 energized and proud.

None of this would have been possible without my incredible Executive Committee: Lillian Glenister, Varun Sabharwal, Shubhra Sharma, Stephanie Germani, Robert Shawhan, Catharine McGlynn, and Ryan Stygar.

Special thanks to Shubhra and Catharine for completing their second terms. Your dedication and leadership made a lasting impact. To the rest of the team, soon to be led by Lillian in 2026, I am so excited to see what you accomplish and the direction you take this Division.

If there is one thing I hope you take away from our leadership this year, it is three guiding principles.

1. Advocate boldly. No matter your practice area, lawyers have a vital role in standing up for others, especially those who cannot stand up for themselves. The law will continue to evolve, but the need for committed, compassionate advocates never will. When we give back to our communities, that energy often returns in meaningful ways.

2. Show up authentically. You do not have to leave your personality, creativity, or individuality at the door to be a strong, accomplished lawyer. Our profession is stronger and more impactful when we bring our full selves to the work.

3. Prioritize self-care. The legal world is demanding, and burnout is real. We serve our clients, colleagues, and communities best when we first take care of ourselves.

Serving as your Chair has been a true privilege and an unforgettable experience. While my term has ended, my connection with this incredible community does not. I am always here for a coffee, a conversation, or to brainstorm ideas together. Reach out anytime at 559-284-7861 or connect with me on LinkedIn or Instagram

I look forward to celebrating your successes, sharing in your ideas, and continuing the work we care so deeply about together!

Respectfully,
Claudia Salinas
