Mindful Minute — Welcoming Change: Finding Your Rhythm in the Fall
By Koryn Sheppard
As we move into September, we feel a shift in the air. The long, lazy days of summer are giving way to the crisp mornings and cool, golden-lit evenings of autumn. For many, this is a time of transition. Kids are heading back to school, summer vacations are now happy memories, and the busy holiday season is still on the horizon. This period can feel a little jarring, a sudden change in pace that can leave us feeling off-balance.
However, this season of change presents an opportunity to welcome it and find a new rhythm. Much like nature prepares for a new season, we too can adapt our routines and practices to find a sense of comfort and stability amidst the transition. This is where intentional self-care comes in, allowing us to celebrate the unique beauty of fall and nourish ourselves for the months ahead.
The human brain is wired to find comfort in routine, but is also incredibly adaptable. Embracing change can strengthen our resilience. By actively participating in this seasonal shift, we can create new anchors of joy and well-being. Think of it as a conscious act of welcoming fall into your life, mind, and home.
Engaging your senses is a powerful way to ground yourself in the present moment and celebrate the change in season. Just as the air feels different, you can intentionally change the atmosphere in your home. This can look different for everyone, and we can customize the approach to meet our own needs. For example, if aromatherapy appeals to you, swap out summery scents for something cozier like pumpkin, apple, or vanilla. If you love music, a new playlist with music that feels calming or more introspective can set your mood. Perhaps, like me, you like to bake (which also has aromatherapy elements). Recipes earmarked for fall can help to welcome a new season.
The fall brings a natural shift toward slowing down and turning inward. Use this as an invitation to adjust your daily life and find a new flow. With school and work schedules picking up, it’s easy to get lost in the busyness. Take a moment to intentionally schedule time for yourself, even if it’s as small as a quiet morning with a cup of coffee (or tea). As the weather cools, you might swap a high-energy summer workout for something more grounding, like a long hike or some gentle yoga.
Every season has its unique feeling and experiences. By creating rituals, you can find joy in the present moment and make the transition feel special. I admit, I’m “that” girl who loves Fall. I swap my candle scents, I make my fall recipes (top among them are my Dutch Apple Bread and Butternut Squash lasagna), watch fun fall movies (Practical Magic is a guilty pleasure), and of course, the annual trip to Bates Nut Farm to get a pumpkin (or pumpkins). One year, I went pumpkin crazy, from food to candles to skincare products. I also love to browse Halloween décor.
By consciously welcoming change and celebrating the small joys of fall, you can turn a potentially jarring transition into a nourishing experience. Embrace the shift, find your rhythm, and celebrate the new season- your way.
