Progress of women in the legal profession has followed such a trajectory — nationally and locally. The founders and early members of Lawyers Club of San Diego galvanized moments, big and small, that advanced the status of women in the law. Two anecdotes reveal the grit and resilience that their efforts required.
Through it all, what I have learned is there is no “right” way. It just takes the will to find a way.
From the adverse effects of air pollution to those of surface coal mining operations and the discharge of pollutants into navigable waters, states have a critical role in protecting the environment through the administration and enforcement of federal regulations.
Because those orientations remain ominously omnipresent in our country 60 years after the Freedom Rides, it is incumbent upon all of us to take a lesson from the courage of 1961 and continue to metaphorically “ride buses” for freedom, and battle the scourge of racism that has haunted the U.S. since slavery.
Good morning, court is now in session. Does it matter that in the courtroom there’s only me, my clerk, and a video screen or telephone? Even if you’re only a small picture on a monitor or a voice over the telephone, you’re still appearing in court.
“Mentorship and sponsorship are vital to a successful career. Mentors and sponsors have traveled the road to success and can provide valuable insight — ‘Don’t make the same mistakes I did.’ Having said that, we all make mistakes and a mentor or sponsor can be there to help you recover.”
Finding my voice as a female litigator was made easier by the work of many others before I started.
As I sit to write this editorial, the dilemma that plagues me is this: rather than ask why are Black women important in the workplace, I am wondering when they haven't been important?
I invite you to keep an open mind and reexamine rules that are enforcing white cultural norms instead of recognizing the advantages of embracing the multicultural environment we inhabit.
